This month, we’re focusing on Feminine Care. That can mean a lot of things, but to us, it means taking time to share love, support, and kindness with the girls in your life, whenever possible. This can be something as simple as helping someone up who tripped at recess, or paying for the person behind you in line at the drive thru. Of course, if you’re looking to help more routinely, there are lots of options available in your area.
We talked last week about a few of the ways you can help Be Prepared Period to donate period supplies to ladies in your area. As we head into the holidays and our calendars start to fill up, finding the time to do anything extra can feel impossible. But, this is exactly when we need to take time to remember how fortunate we are, and do our best to share that gratitude in the form of service to others. The amazing thing is that when we do this, we get so much fulfillment in return – that’s truly the beauty of giving!
If you’ve decided to give back, the first step will be finding an organization you can work with. Often times, even those with the best of intentions can get overwhelmed when faced with all of the possibilities. Where do you even start? Deep breaths, sister: we’ve lined up five great ways you can get started in your area. We’ve compiled a list of ideas that will serve a variety of different skills and availabilities. 1. Volunteer at a women’s shelter: In addition to providing meals and lodging to women and families, many shelters provide legal services, counseling, and vocational training. There are so many ways to help out – which makes this a great choice for someone looking for a wide variety of experience. Many shelters require a training program to work with victims of domestic violence, so this is a volunteer opportunity that is best suited for those who are looking for a long term commitment.
2. Become a mentor: When girls are empowered from a young age, they go on to become more successful adults, which improves the quality of life for everyone. And what better way to work directly with young girls in your community than to become a mentor? From the Boys & Girls Club to Big Brothers Big Sisters and beyond, there are so many programs available to those interested in mentorship. Many organizations have a minimum commitment, so be sure to consider your availability before applying. But, if you have a few hours 1-2 times a month to volunteer, this is a fantastic (and incredibly rewarding) way to get connected.
3. Join a club: Consider joining a local women’s organization or club, like I AM THAT GIRL (IATG). IATG’s mission is: “Raising the standards for how girls treat themselves, each other, and the world. By building a community for girls to be seen, be heard, and belong, we are giving them something bigger than themselves to stand for and creating a healthier, more powerful world.” Powerful stuff! If you don’t have much time to commit, or you’re not quite ready to jump into a more formal volunteer position, don’t underestimate the power of connecting to a community of women. Together, we can make a difference.
4. Use your voice: Use your online presence for good! Don’t get us wrong, we love seeing cute puppy photos. But our social media profiles can be more than that: they can serve as a platform. Share local fundraisers, follow local organizations, and speak up for what you believe in when you need to. You never know how much of an impact your positivity and passion can have on the people around you.
5. Partner with BPP to donate period supplies: We started the Feminine CARE Donation Program to provide women with the products they need to live happier, healthier lives. If you’re looking to get involved, you can become a program ambassador to promote the initiative in your area. Find more details and apply to become an ambassador here! You can also donate directly to the program by clicking this link. Or, shop for your monthly supplies at Be Prepared Period using an organization code from one of our participating organizations, and we’ll donate 10% of every purchase made to women and girls in need. Most likely, you already shop for supplies each month – why not help others with your purchase?
Remember, “Alone, we can do so little. Together, we can do so much.” As women, we possess the power to change the world through our acts of kindness, generosity, and empowering others. How cool is that? We’d love to hear from you – be sure to share your volunteer experience with us. You can email us at info@www.bepreparedperiod.com Here’s to a better period (and a better world!)
