Last week we gave away 5 Lunette Cups with our friends at You ARE Loved.org. In conjunction with the giveaway we asked women, “What is your #1 reason for wanting to try Lunette?” These are a few of their answers:

1. “I have already tried the Lunette, and it is amazing!! I would LOVE the opportunity to win one to give to my best friend for Mother’s Day!”

2. “I want to use Lunette because I want to use a reusable menstrual cup instead of pads and tampons.”

3. “I want to explore ALL my options now that I am having green periods”

4. “I want to try Lunette because I am interested in seeing if it’s a better fit for me (in terms of leaks) than the Diva Cup I’ve been using since the fall of 2010. Plus, they’re available in pretty colors!”

5. “I’ve heard great things about the lunette and I’d love to give it a try because I hate disposable products” READ MORE… »

Camping with a menstrual cup, scary or sensible?

Expecting to start my period the day we were scheduled to leave for our camping trip I was “prepared” and decided to bring my DivaCup with me. I’ve never enjoyed the inconvenience my period has caused during a camping trip, the extra concern of being somewhere I could change my tampon or the early morning wake up calls from aunt flo. There’s nothing like waking up with that startling feeling of needing to rush to the bathroom, to be challenged with crawling out of the sleeping bag, bundling up in warm clothes, climbing out of the tent, to only have to walk who knows how far to the nearest bathroom in fear of a LEAK!

Understanding Your Menstrual CycleUnderstanding your menstrual cycle – sounds clinical, doesn’t it? Like something we would study in high school health class or in a college level women’s studies course.

To be honest with you, I wish that during my growing up years someone had given me the opportunity to learn the information that will be shared during the PeriodTalk Tweetchat on November 9, 2012 from 2:00 – 3:00 p.m. ET. This type of information is empowering and can be life changing!

I know it was for me when I first discovered it. It has revolutionized my view of my own menstrual cycle and enabled me to appreciate my period.

Appreciate my period?  YES!  A woman’s period is so much more than 3 to 7 days of bleeding just as the menstrual cycle is so much more than the “period” period.

Your period marks the beginning of a new cycle – a beginning.  Beginnings are filled with possibilities and opportunities. READ MORE… »

Hygiene products are something that most of us use but don’t really think very much about. However, there are ingredients in many of them than contribute to pollution of our environment. Since you don’t want to give up the process of good hygiene there is a better alternative to consider. This involves the use of organic products, and more of them are offered now than ever before.

The average family uses a large number of cotton swabs and cotton balls. They use them to clean their ears, to put on medication, and to clean cuts. These items can all be found in an organic product to help you keep your body as clean as possible. Organic cotton is grown without the use of pesticides or chemicals so you can feel great about using such products.

There are many organic hygiene products made for women due to their menstrual cycle. These include both pads and tampons. There are also organic panty liners. All of them are made from 100% organic cotton. Women go through a large number of these products on a regular basis. You can easily see how that can contribute to too much waste in our environment.

Let’s talk about it, and take it seriously

Too young for menopause?Usually when a day is designated to a specific cause or event it is meant to be celebrated, but if you ask a woman going through menopause what she thinks of Menopause Day she’ll tell you there is nothing celebratory about hot flashes, migraines, fluctuating body weight and low libido. So instead of celebrating it, this commemoratory event should be an opportunity for us to educate the world about this “special time of our lives” and to address the issues and concerns that many women (and their men) have that aren’t always openly discussed at the dinner table.

Am I too young for Menopause?

Thursday, October 18th, 2012 is World Menopause Day. This is like a worldwide birthday party for the big M! This year, the sponsoring organization, the International Menopause Society (IMS), is launching a campaign to focus on the health implications of weight gain during menopause. (Coincidentally, I blogged about weight gain a few weeks ago.) How can you celebrate?  Open up the channels of communication and break the taboo that somehow still lingers around the topic of perimenopause and menopause. It’s silly, and it’s time we’re done with it. Raise a toast to you, your Mom, your sisters, Aunts, and to women worldwide who share this passage of womanhood.

World Menopause Day

What are some ways you can honor and celebrate yourself or other women you know who are experiencing perimenopause or menopause? How about throwing a Menopause Party? Quick! When you think of the word “party,” what comes to mind? The legendary toga party in Animal House? Jake Ryan’s house party in Sixteen Candles? The seniority in Dazed and Confused? Though all of these parties had different features—from ivy to paddles—they have one thing in common: the reason for celebration—each other. Parties exist for fun! Menopause parties are no different. As the taboo surrounding perimenopause and menopause  is peeled away layer by layer like your clothes during a hot flash, more women are looking to parties for support, the latest information, resources and sisterhood. A guest post by our Irish friend, Samantha Kelly

Samantha Kelly - Funky GoddessBack to School!!

The sun is shining and all the rain has stopped! This can only mean one thing! Yes the schools are back! After a rainy summer here in Ireland, stuck indoors my 13 year old Daughter went off to Secondary School to start her journey into the world of Teenage Dreams, peer pressure and Boys!!

Aarrgh! I can’t believe She is going to secondary school already!  I remember her asking me could she get a puppy when she was five and spending hours and hours throwing the ball for our dog Candy.  The dog is lucky if she gets acknowledged when she stomps in the door with her overweight schoolbag now! (Why do they make books so heavy anyway)?

Ah but one of the best things about going back to school is the fact that she has a bit more knowledge of periods and is always prepared with her ‘Secret Casket’ in her schoolbag.  Of course, because She is the daughter of Funky Goddess, her friends know that she always has a supply of pads readily available, so she tends to pack a few extra these days, due to girls approaching her in case of emergency. She says she likes this as she feels like she is helpful to her peers. This isn’t a bad quality to have at all and I am so proud of her for it. (could be worse, she could be the go to person for much nastier reasons)! READ MORE… »
