Your Period Shouldn’t Be Painful
March is Endometriosis Awareness Month. “Endo” is a painful disease that affects at least 176 million people worldwide. The Be Prepared Period team sends love and support to our many Endo sisters (and brothers!) experiencing the disease. This month on the blog, we’re diving into the personal journeys of those that have received an Endometriosis Diagnoses. Dr. Allegra Hart, a naturopathic physician, will also be sharing her Endo story and what it took to receive a diagnosis. For many, this process can take years, and the first step to any diagnosis is awareness. READ MORE… »

Nutritional Tips for your Menstrual Cycle

I’m here to help women with hormonal dysfunction who are living in a state of overwhelm and anxiety to live harmoniously with the rhythms of their bodies. I do this so these women can stand in their power and use self-love as a catalyst for lasting change and Happy Hormones.

Listen, I’ve been through it all.

When I started nutrition school at the Institute of Holistic Nutrition, I was on Cloud 9. I changed my diet up big time (who knew vegetarianism wasn’t going to be popular!) and studied hard. READ MORE… »

Continuing with this month’s theme of making natural choices for our bodies, this week we’re talking about how to harness our innate connection to nature, and turn that energy into serious period-power. When we connect with our body and its natural rhythms, we gain a new level of understanding, acceptance, and even comfort with ourselves. You have the power to rethink the way you look at your period – and that important  shift can work wonders for your physical and mental well-being.

No matter how much we embrace our bodies, sometimes having your period can seriously suck. PMS can make your skin freak out.  Cramps can distract you from your daily activities.  And the other plethora of menstrual side effects can make a few days of your cycle less than desirable. But no matter how uncomfortable menstruation is, it is a not-so-subtle reminder for us to harness the moon’s innate potential. Plus, it is a perfect time to either start or get back into your yoga practice.

Detox your period - one womans quest to find the best natural period product

Let’s say you go for a nice long run. You come home feeling invigorated, refreshed, and happy to have done a nice thing for your body. You’re thirsty. You grab a glass, head to the fridge, and pour yourself a nice big serving of Galaxolide (your favorite drink, and a known endocrine-disrupting chemical.) Once you’ve had your fill – you jump in the shower to rinse off. As you step out and begin to dry off, you pull out your favorite bottle of chlorine-bleach lotion, and generously slather it all over your skin. Ah…there’s nothing like taking care of your body, right?

Hold up – what the what?!

If you think this sounds ridiculous, you’re right. No one would knowingly wipe bleach all over their skin, right? Right. So that’s why the following fact is so troubling: according to a recent report by the nonprofit Women’s Voices for the Earth, traditional feminine hygiene products may use ingredients that are known or suspected endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs), carcinogens, or allergens. Yikes. READ MORE… »

The start of a new year signals many of us to look inward – reflecting on the past year, gearing up for the twelve months to come – it’s a great time to take stock of where you are emotionally, physically, and more. The concept is a positive one, and reflection is something that can certainly help to better our lives. Unfortunately, New Year’s resolutions have become a way for us to pick ourselves apart, rather than build ourselves up. So many people attempt to change everything about themselves in one swoop, which can quickly lead to frustration or disappointment when high expectations are dashed early in the year.

unique-stocking-stuffer-ideas-for-her

As the holidays quickly approach, it’s time for us to start shopping! But, for many, this season doesn’t just bring about credit card debt, it also brings up memories of years past. We think of our family. We think of our friends. We think of when we first learned the truth about Santa.

For some of us, this truth was devastating: it was up there with learning that Milli Vanilli were actually imposters rather than the super awesome singers who’s tape we totally don’t still listen to. From a practical standpoint, it was also annoying. Once our parents knew that we knew, they stopped trying. Rather than stockings full of money or candy or the latest electronics, we got stuff we needed. Gee, Santa, thanks so much for the maxi pads.

weekly-game-monthly-pains-what-football-and-periods-have-in-common

For some people, saying that periods and football have a lot in common might be a stretch; after all, the NFL doesn’t exactly stand for National Feminine Product League.

Still, there are definitely commonalities, making it a game that ladies can certainly relate to even if they don’t fancy themselves much of a sport’s fan.

So, what exactly happens when Aunt Flo meets a Tom Brady or a Russel Wilson? Well, football terms turn into a little bit of this….

Delay of Game: In football, a delay of game happens when the game clock runs down before the ball is snapped. In the world of periods, it happens when women take too long getting ready simply because PMS has caused us to break out horribly and we’re busy covering up all of our zits (i.e., we’re putting on our facemasks). Remember when we thought acne was just a teenage thing? That was hilarious. READ MORE… »
