Is it true that tampons aren’t recommended for girls and women with disabilities? And is it true that cotton tampons are preferred over the normal brands?

Hi,

I’m 20 and have Asperger Syndrome (High-Functioning Autism). I usually use tampons when I’m on my period, but I’ve heard that tampons aren’t recommended for girls and women with certain disabilities (like Autism Spectrum Disorders) because of risk of TSS (Toxic Shock Syndrome). Is that true? I’ve also heard that cotton tampons are preferred for girls with disabilities who prefer tampons over pads. Is that correct?

Great questions, Leanne.

The important thing to remember is that tampons that are not 100% organic cotton carry an increased risk of TSS - for all women.

If internal products are prefered over external (pads), organic cotton tampons are a good option as are menstrual cups (such as Lunette, Diva, Instead Softcups, Keeper). There's not been a case of TSS associated with menstrual cup use.

Cotton tampons are best for everyone, not just girls or women with disabilities, because 100% cotton is a natural fiber that is less likely to cause irritation or TSS. 100% ORGANIC Cotton Tampons are even better because organic cotton is grown using traditional farming methods that are pesticide and chemical free. Our brand of Maxim Hygiene tampons are not only made with 100% Organic Cotton, but they are Chlorine Free too, keeping carcinogens away from your most absorbent body parts!
