Hi, I’m 20 and have Asperger Syndrome (High-Functioning Autism). I usually use tampons when I’m on my period, but I’ve heard that tampons aren’t recommended for girls and women with certain disabilities (like Autism Spectrum Disorders) because of risk of TSS (Toxic Shock Syndrome). Is that true? I’ve also heard that cotton tampons are preferred for girls with disabilities who prefer tampons over pads. Is that correct?

Great questions, Leanne. The important thing to remember is that tampons that are not 100% organic cotton carry an increased risk of TSS - for all women. If internal products are prefered over external (pads), organic cotton tampons are a good option as are menstrual cups (such as Lunette, Diva, Instead Softcups, Keeper).
