My first period happened in the eighth grade. Age 14. I was a late bloomer, I guess you could say. I was a gymnast, cheerleader, and ran track; very athletic. I never had the talk with my mother. So when it came, I had no idea what to do. I was wearing shorts and I seen red on my legs. So I went to the bathroom casually. And tons of blood gushed out. I wadded toilet paper up, and put it in my underwear. READ MORE… »

I remember walking back to the house from the sand bar because i had to pee REALLY bad. So when i got to the house and went to the bathroom i saw blood gushing out of me!!!!! I was FREAKING out because i was only 11, and LOVED swimming and tubing in the lake. So i sat there and cried (nobody was home) and i would NOT use a tampon!!!!!! So then i rememberd i packed a pad ( just in case) so i just wore that and i was fine. Untill i had to take a shower……i only brang 1 pad, soooooo i was thinking stupid and put my used pad in a drawer untill i got out of the shower. I started my period during a morning before school. I woke up to get dressed for school, went to the bathroom, and there was blood all over my clothes. So I hollered to my mom, luckily she had some thin panty liners. I wore them for the first time. The second time I switched to bigger ones. I did end up going to school. READ MORE… »

I got my first period when I was 9. I blame drinking hormone filled cows milk as a child. That day I had a friend sleeping over and I woke and went to the bathroom to find that my undies and pajamas and legs were covered. It looked like I had a murder in my pants. So I sat there screaming with the door locked and I wouldnt let anyone in. I knew where my mom kept her pads but they were far too large for me. Hers were 14 inches long and 2 inches thick. My friend called for my mom who went to the store to pick up some appropriate supplies. After that we had hot cocoa, ice cream, and made cookies so we could eat the cookie dough. I felt really awful that day, READ MORE… »

I remember going to the bathroom after my mom’s dinner party and seeing pink on the tissue and thought oh no I’m dying, lol. My mom explained to me that this was what she told me during that birds and bees talk two years earlier would happen. It didn’t hurt much the first time but ever since then I think it’s trying to take me out! I was 13 and during the dinner party I thought I just had a tummy ache. My mom went in her room that night and cried because her little girl was growing up.

When I first got my period, I was 11 years old and was at my father’s house for the weekend. I went to the bathroom and noticed blood on my panties. I started crying! My dad found out I was crying and asked what was wrong. I was too embarrassed to tell him and I knew it would be awkward for him. Instead I called my mom and she came to pick me up. She bought me icecream, magazines, and midol for cramps. I remember sleeping alot the first time and enjoyed the attention I got from my mom.

Say it again Last fall I had a conversation about menstruation with my then two-year-old daughter. I didn’t want to; I was forced. Some were amused by its content. Some inspired. Just the other night, the topic of periods came up again. Because I was having mine, and once again my daughter saw the string between my legs. What is a Period, MommyThe conversation started off exactly like the first time, but ended up going in a different, more detailed direction… “Somefeen in your butt, Mommy.” “We had this conversation before, honey. Do you remember? There is nothing in my butt. It’s in my vagina, and it’s called a tampon.” A look of recognition came across her face, and she nodded as if to say she remembered. And then she was quiet for a moment. I thought I was getting off easy this time. But… READ MORE… »

I was a late bloomer. At 15 years old, I had gotten breasts and was fairly tall, but I still hadn’t hit menarche. I was beginning to think I was infertile, and I would always clam up around girls at the lunch table talking about period woes. I was also jealous that I didn’t have that excuse to get out of swim class! I always thought I would wake up one morning, see the blood as I stepped into the shower, and look at myself in the mirror, feeling like a true woman. Instead, I got it in global history class the year I turned 15. I’d simply gone to the bathroom and saw a very small amount of blood. As excited as I was, I couldn’t show it. I didn’t want my young, attractive male history teacher to know! I stuffed a wad of toilet paper between my legs and ran back to class, unable to concentrate on anything else. I got home and got a lot more fanfare from my mother than expected. She took us all out to my favorite restaurant in my honor.

Growing up I was the first to mature. I remember being teased in school because I wore a bra. My mom was a single mother and I was alone a lot. I had a good friend and her mom was always home. They were a very open family. It helped that when I was going through my first stages of puberty my friend welcomed a baby brother into her family. We asked numerous questions and she answered them wholeheartedly.

So when I experienced my first period my mother didn’t know. I told my friend and we put the pieces together. I borrowed pads from my mom, but she never mentioned they were gone.

About a year later she sat me down to have the talk because our school was going to be doing a “your body” talk and she didn’t want me to be surprised. When I told her I knew and had already started my period she looked shocked, but relieved too. We never mentioned it again.
